What happened to the Black and Jewish partnership of the civil rights movement? Are the stories we tell about the connections between the Black and Jewish communities accurate? Where were the Black Jews in these discussions? As we commemorate the tenth anniversary since Freddie Gray was killed, Third Space brings to the bima an important conversation about the narratives we hold from the past and what it would look like to create a new narrative moving forward. Leaning on the metaphors presented in Black Power, Jewish Politics: Reinventing the Alliance in the 1960s, This event will include a discussion moderated by Rabbi Jessy Dressin with author Marc Dollinger, Richard and Rhoda Goldman Endowed Chair in Jewish Studies and Social Responsibility at San Francisco State University, and Ilana Kaufman, author of the book’s afterword and CEO of the Jews of Color Initiative.
BIPOC Jews are invited to join a special reception with Ms. Kaufman at 5 pm, immediately preceding the booktalk.
