This will be a three-part series taught from 12:00 – 1:30 PM on Wednesday, November 13, December 4, and December 11
One of the basic concepts the rabbis develop is the law of the Four Guardians (Bailees) which considers the nature of one’s obligations when one finds themselves in possession of another’s property. Based on the Torah’s presentation, the rabbis launch a variegated discussion of various scenarios you might face — how you should act and how a court should adjudicate litigation when the owner is not satisfied with the outcome of your possession of their property. Along the way we get to consider the bigger question — just what are our obligations to one another?
We will be reading Maimonides’s Code of Law, known alternatively as Mishneh Torah or Yad haHazakah (the strong hand). We will access the Mishneh Torah and other texts at www.sefaria.org, so please bring an internet enabled device. This class is intended to be for those who want to dive deep into a section of traditional Jewish text, and it is encouraged to attend all sessions.
This series is free to attend but registration is required, with a suggested donation of $18-$36 at checkout.
BYO lunch. Snacks and beverages will be provided.
